Global research firm TNS, in a study involving about 34,000 people in 43 different countries, and more than 1,000 in Canada, found that 41 per cent of those polled in Canada had a smartphone, compared to 28 per cent worldwide. Men between the ages of 22 and 30 were the heaviest users of smartphones in Canada, TNS said.
As for tablet computers, such as the iPad from Apple Inc. and the new BlackBerry PlayBook from Research In Motion Ltd., seven per cent of Canadians respondents said they had one, compared to five per cent for North America overall. Thirty-one per cent of Canadians said they intended to purchase a tablet within the next six months, with those age 31 to 40 showing the most interest.
Almost one-quarter of those polled in Canada said they were using their mobile device to access social networks, up from six per cent in a similar study done last year.
As well, 10 per cent of Canadians said they're using their cellphone as a "mobile wallet," making it work almost like a credit card. Four in 10 expressed interest in using their mobile device this way.
The surveys took place between November last year and January. For Canada, they were conducted online. There was no margin of error immediately available for the study's results.
